NTC renews NOW Telecom’s permit to operate mobile network

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 10) — The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) renewed NOW Telecom’s radio license to operate a mobile telco network.

The regulator granted it a permit renewal in the 800 MHZ band, making it the fourth company allowed to run a mobile telecommunications system after Smart, Globe Telecom, and DITO Telecommunity.

NOW Telecom, an affiliate of listed media and technology holding firm NOW Corp., said it received the license from the regulator on Oct. 2.

“This license renewal with the most coveted 800 MHZ frequencies shall strengthen the communications security and connectivity to vital critical infrastructures in the country,” Mel Velarde, NOW Group chairman, said in a statement Monday.

Velarde said the group is targeting to fire up 16 critical infrastructures identified by the Philippine government and the US Department of Homeland Security.

Late last year, NOW Telecom secured grant funding from the US government for the development and rollout of 5G in the local market.
